Why we should all help to create a greener future

Did you know that road transport makes up around 21% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions1? And good drivers can have up to 37% better fuel consumption2.

So how well you drive, and how often you drive, can make a big difference to your carbon footprint, and your wallet.

How to get rewarded for greener choices

Our Good Driving Programme helps you to reduce your carbon emissions. When you drive well or leave the car at home, you can get rewarded for your greener choices...

Drive well

Drive well to earn up to six Vitality points each day. We’ll then offset your carbon emissions through our partner, Carbon Footprint. The more points you earn, the more we'll offset. Earn six points in a day and we'll offset 100% of your vehicle emissions.

Leave the car at home

There may be days where you could swap the car for walking or cycling. Whatever the reason, if you choose to leave the car at home you'll earn six Vitality points for each car-free day.

The more points you earn, the better your Good Driving status. The better your status, the lower your excess, in the event of a claim. Reach Gold or Platinum status and stay claim free to earn a No Increase Guarantee at renewal.

More on carbon offsetting

When you earn Vitality points for driving well, we’ll offset your carbon emissions as follows:

  • Six points a day – 100%
  • Five points a day – 70%
  • Four points a day – 50%
  • Three points a day – 30%
  • Two points a day – 10%
  • Below two points a day – we won’t offset any of your emissions.

We calculate your carbon emissions per mile using DVLA vehicle emissions data. We use your mileage from your Good Driving sensor. You can find out more information on the data we use in our Privacy Policy.

Carbon offsetting: it's good for you and for society

Our partner Carbon Footprint is a Quality Assurance Standard (QAS) certified carbon offset provider.

Through them, we’ve chosen to fund the following portfolio of projects in the UK and around the world.

More trees in the UK and protecting the Amazon

Your greener choices can help to boost local biodiversity.

Help us to plant trees in UK schools and nature reserves so they remove carbon dioxide, protect biodiversity and teach kids about climate change.

For each tree planted in a UK school, we’ll go one step further and protect the Amazon rainforest, preventing it from being cut down.

Better cooking stoves in Darfur

Your greener choices can help to improve the health and lives of women in Darfur, Sudan.

Help us to replace wood burning stone fires with EzyStove®. This will offer 40% savings on wood burned and will reduce smoke particles by 70% that are harmful to eyes and lungs.

More renewable energy in Thailand

Your greener choices can help to fund more renewable energy.

Help us to invest in the construction of a new wind farm in ThailandThis will reduce their reliance on fossil fuels for energy production. Plus, it will contribute towards decarbonising their national grid.

Greener future FAQs

Our everyday actions, at home and at work, consume energy and produce carbon emissions.

A carbon offset is a way to compensate for your emissions, by funding a carbon saving elsewhere.

Carbon offsetting is the process of funding projects around the world that help to reduce carbon emissions by a measurable and verifiable amount.

Our carbon offsetting projects also provide wider societal benefits:

  • Biodiversity
  • Education
  • Jobs
  • Food security
  • Health and wellbeing.

An activity is carbon neutral if all the carbon emissions resulting from that activity have been offset.

It's not the solution if done in isolation, but it does play a vital role in rapidly helping to combat climate change.

Individuals, businesses, and government organisations can all take steps to reduce carbon emissions. Carbon offsetting can then be used for unavoidable carbon emissions.
