Vitality consultant and hospital cover options

To give you more choice, the way you get hospital treatment with us is completely different from other providers.

Your plan automatically includes our Consultant Select option, where an independent panel of doctors choose the best consultant for you, based entirely on your medical needs.

However, if you prefer to choose your consultant and hospital yourself, add our Hospital Select option to your plan.

Whichever option you choose, we use leading private UK hospitals to make sure you get the best care. All offer the highest standards of treatment in a clean, relaxing and peaceful setting, to help you get better as quickly as possible.

Consultant Select - treatment based on care not cost

Included in our Core Cover this gives you complete peace-of-mind care, because it lets doctors decide who should treat you – instead of an insurer. When you need a referral, our Consultant Panel chooses the best consultant for you, based entirely on your medical needs.

The Consultant Panel is formed by Alliance Health Group – an independent doctor-owned organisation. They’re the biggest national group of UK consultants in private practice, all reviewed and audited by their peers. They also undergo customer satisfaction assessments, so you can be sure of getting the highest standards of care.

The advantages of our Consultant Panel

  • You get a consultant based on your specific needs, symptoms and medical history.
  • If your consultant says you need more treatment, the panel fully manage your claim – there’s no need to contact us for authorisation.
  • We pay the consultant directly and in full – there are no fee shortfalls with us.

Easy to use

  • Make a claim online or over the phone or use our free Vitality GP app to book a private video consultation. If they think you need more treatment, they contact the Consultant Panel for you.
  • The Consultant Panel looks at your symptoms and medical history, then recommends the best consultant, based on their expertise for your needs.

Hospital Select

Our Hospital Select option gives you more control over who treats you and where you’re treated. If you choose this option, you can add one of three hospital lists to your plan:

Local

  • All hospitals in the UK’s largest hospital groups, including BMI Healthcare, Nuffield Health, Spire Healthcare, Ramsay Health Care and Circle Health.
  • A number of local providers, including Aspen Healthcare and the New Victoria Hospital.
  • Also includes two Face-to-Face GP consultations in the London area.

This option does not include Central London hospitals.

Countrywide

  • All hospitals in the UK’s largest hospital groups, including BMI Healthcare, Nuffield Health, Spire Healthcare, Ramsay Health Care and Circle Health.
  • A number of local providers, including Aspen Healthcare and the New Victoria Hospital.
  • The London Clinic, The Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth, King Edward VII’s Sister Agnes Hospital in Central London.
  • Most other private hospitals outside London.
  • All NHS Private Patient Units outside London.
  • Some Central London NHS Private Patient Units.
  • Also includes two Face-to-Face GP consultations in the London area.

London Care

  • All private hospitals in the UK that meet our quality requirements
  • All NHS Private Patient Units in the UK.
  • Also includes unlimited Face-to-Face GP consultations in the London area.

Important information

If you choose one of our hospital list options and use a hospital not on your list, you’ll pay 40% of treatment costs, excluding consultant fees. To avoid this, pick another hospital on your list.

Here are a few of the questions we’ve answered for our members

Can I contact the Consultant Panel directly?

If a Vitality GP says that you need to see a consultant, they’ll complete a referral for the Consultant Panel to review. If you submit a claim by phone or online, we’ll pass your information on to an Alliance Health Group adviser who’ll deal with the panel to review your symptoms and arrange a referral. Alliance Health Group will call you shortly after with the names of your recommended consultants, to discuss appointment times and confirm everything with you. The Consultant Panel will manage your claim while you’re under the care of their recommended consultant, so you can focus on your recovery. If we need to discuss your claim or any aspect of your cover, we’ll contact you.

How qualified are the consultants on the panel?

All Alliance Health Group consultants are acknowledged experts in their fields, working across 65 specialisms and 34 sub-specialisms of medicine. They’ve also been reviewed and recommended by other consultants. If you’re referred to our Consultant Panel, Alliance Health Group will call to offer you a choice of consultants. They’ll also tell you about their experience and specialism.

How quickly can I access care through the Consultant Panel?

Whether you’re referred by the Vitality GP or you submit a claim online or by phone, an Alliance Health Group adviser will get your details as soon as your claim has been approved. They’ll usually contact you the next working day or sooner.

Can I ask for a specific consultant if I'm on Consultant Select?

If you have a consultant in mind, let Alliance Health Group  know when they contact you. They’ll be able to confirm if they form part of the panel, as well as recommend other consultants based on your needs, symptoms and medical history.

What if the consultant I want to see isn't part of the Consultant Panel?

You’ll need to contact us to check your chosen consultant is recognised by us and to get your claim approved. You’ll need to contact us again if your consultant says you need any further treatment which we haven’t already approved.

What if the hospital I want to use isn't on my list?

Use a hospital not on your list and you’ll pay 40% of treatment costs, excluding consultant fees. To avoid this, pick another hospital on your list. If you’ve chosen Consultant Select, we will only pay for treatment we authorise in advance.

What happens if I get referred to a hospital that isn't on my hospital list?

You’ll need to ask your consultant to select another hospital on your hospital list.
